GENERAL RULES 

 

The general rules apply to each driver and pit personnel.  Drivers’ are expected to know the rules and obey them.  The rules set forth have been designed to provide orderly conduct of the sport and are in no way a guarantee against injury, death, or theft to a participant, spectator, or official.  These rules shall govern the condition of all events; and by participation in these events, all participants shall be expected to comply with these rules.

 

Absolutely no alcohol in the pit area before or during event.  No fighting allowed.  Officials’ will not tolerate any profane language/gestures before, during or after the event.  No hot-rodding or speeding in the pit area.  If a car does not run a heat, that car does not run a consolation heat.  The driver/owner is responsible for his/her pit crew and their conduct and safety.  All driver’s and at least one crewmember must attend the driver’s meeting.  Any of the above violations subject the car that he/she is associated with to disqualification and asked to depart from the pit area immediately and may be rejected from other events.  NO REFUNDS will be given for any reason.

 

$150.00 CASH ProTEST FEE for any feature driver who wants to protest a car who has placed ahead of him/her.  The protester must express reasonable complaint of the car he/she is protesting.  The money will go to whoever wins the protest.  Officials will not cut a car apart but may cut an inspection hole in the protested area if necessary.  If any violations of the rules are found, the car will be disqualified and forfeit all prize money.

 

Officials will resolve any and all disagreements.  All decisions by the officials will be final.  Cars will be re-inspected before any prize money is handed out.

 

Ladies may compete with men.  Driver’s must be 16 or older to drive and must have a valid driver’s license.  All drivers’ and pit crew between the ages of 16 and 18 years of age must have guardian’s or parent’s signature prior to participation.  No one in the pit area under the age of 16 allowed.  All driver’s and pit crew must sign a release of liability.

 

A stick will be placed on all cars competing, drivers’ must break it when finished or told to do so.  If driver is bending stick but cannot break it, officials’ will break it.  The stick may not be put back up after it is broken.

 

All cars not removed after the event will become the property of the promoter.

SAFETY RULES

1.      a Fire coat, gloves, dot full faced helmet, eye protection, and long pants are required while driving.  Driver’s must wear seatbelt, helmet, keep arms in car, and stay in the car at all times, until a red flag is waved, and all the cars have stopped, or the derby is over.  Car must have at least one set of working brakes.  A snell 95 helmet or better, neck brace, and full fire suit is highly recommended.

2.      Battery must be removed from stock position and installed inside passenger compartment.  It must be bolted securely to the floor tin with bolts, nuts, and washers.  The battery must be secured over the top with a metal strap, original gas tank strap, or stronger material.  No wire, ratchet straps, bungee cords, or sheet metal screws allowed to secure battery.  These are only used to secure the cover over the battery.  The battery must be covered with a non-flammable material.  Any bolts to secure battery must be 3/8” to 5/8” and washers 1” to 5”x 5” this also pertains to gas tank, transmission cooler, and driver’s seat. 

3.      Brace bars must be a 2”- 4" square or round metal bar, 1/8” thick, placed directly behind the driver’s seat with a minimum of 6”x 6" and a maximum 16”x 24” metal plate.  The plate must be at least 1/8” thick and attached to the ends of brace bar and SECURED TO CAR BY BOLTING, OR WELDING TO THE HEAVIEST PART OF DOORPOST.  A dash bar and two bars connecting from dash bar along both inside front doors to bar behind seat may be installed.  If the dash is removed, a dash bar must be installed.  Roll cage may be installed in driver’s compartment, but not under hood or behind the driver’s seat bar and must not be secured to the frame, only the body.  Ignition distributor protectors allowed on engine only but may not touch the frame, body or brace bars.  limited weld rev. 2/07        

4.      Car numbers AND SIGN must be placed on the roof of the car no smaller than 12", and must be able to be read from both sides.  The passenger and drivers front doors must have numbers at least 18" tall.  Both the sign and the doors must have a white background with dark colored numbers for easy visibility.

5.      Car preparation, It is mandatory that all glass be removed.  Broken glass, dirt, and loose debris must be swept from the car.  Do not break the door windows and leave the glass in the door.  The rear seats and interior must be removed, plastic bumper covers, head lights, tail lights, tail lenses, all chrome trim, interior and exterior door handles, door lock cylinders, license plate brackets, luggage racks, mud flaps, and trailer hitches must be removed prior to admittance to the race track.

6.      Driving, NO HEAD ON HITS, they must be at an angle.  DO NOT HIT THE DRIVER’S DOOR!!!  Do not use driver’s door as a shield.  Sometimes these do accidentally occur, but if it looks intentional, or careless, driver will be disqualified.  No love taps, no hitting dead cars, or cars with no stick, and no teamwork allowed.  All drivers’ must hit everyone.  There is a 20-second AGGRESSIVE HIT rule on all cars and 60 seconds to restart or if hung up.  Any violation could cause disqualification.  The derby will be stopped for bumpers or axles in the arena and removed for everyone’s safety. 

7.      Driver’s door, Optional, a MAXIMUM of 12” wide, and MAXIMUM of 1/4” thick plate, 6” past door seam to brace outside of driver’s door.  The plate MUST conform to door and not stick out.  No grader blades allowed.  

8.      FIREWALL, Any holes in firewall must be covered with a non-flammable material to prevent competitor from being sprayed by hot oil, or water. 

9.      Gas tank, The original tank must be removed and a leak proof fuel cell or boat tank must be placed behind the driver’s seat.  PLASTIC TANKS MAY BE USED ONLY IF IT IS IN A 1/8” METAL BOX AROUND ALL SIX SIDES with a minimum of two 1/2” drain holes in bottom of box for protectionNo 5-gallon gas cans allowed.  The tank must be bolted securely to the floor tin with bolts, nuts, and washers.  The tank must be secured over top with a chain, original gas tank straps, or stronger material.  No bungee cords, ratchet straps, sheet metal screws, or wire allowed to secure gas tank.  These are only used to secure the cover over the tank.  The gas tank, electric fuel pump, and all fuel lines must be covered with a non-flammable material.  NO FUEL LINES THROUGH THE BACK SEAT AREA; ALL LINES MUST BE ALONG FRAME RAIL OR INSIDE OF PASSENGER COMPARTMENT OF THE CAR.  (This is to prevent lines from rupture).  No straight alcohol or nitrous may be used, and there is a 6 gallon fuel limit. 

10.   Transmission and engine oil coolers allowed in passenger compartment only if all exposed lines are covered with a non- flammable material (Including braided lines).  Coolers must be securely fastened and placed in a metal box, or have a metal shield to protect against ruptures and spraying of hot oil on driver. 

11.   Windshield bars must be welded or bolted on, to protect the driver (3/8” bolts, nuts, and washers MINIMUM).  Two bars from the top of the windshield to the dash area, one must be in center of windshield and the other between the first bar and the driver’s side.  Bars must be a MINIMUM of 5/8" diameter or strap 1” wide 1/8” thick.

CAR RULES

1.      Any, American made sedan or station wagon over 106” wheelbase may compete.  No 4x4’s, ambulance, hearse, truck, limousine, compact, or foreign cars.  No Imperial sub frame under non-Imperial cars.  Some derbies will outlaw Imperial Chrysler 1973 and older or Lincoln Continental 1970 and older.  Newer model years of Imperials or Lincolns may compete and may change bumpers.

2.      Body mounts must have 1 1/4" gap between frame and body.  Body bolts may be replaced with up to a 1" bolt with a maximum 5”x 5” 1/4” thick washer on top and maximum 3”x 3” 1/4” thick washer on bottom it must fit inside frame, and must look like factory.  If car has a factory body mount and hole in the frame, a bolt may be installed through it.  No adding any extra body mounts or bolts.  Note see rule 8 for front body mounts.

3.      Bumpers are interchangeable with any automotive car bumper in any position.  Except, Imperial 73 and older, must have stock bumper, and stock bumper brackets, in stock location front and rear bumpers.  All bumper brackets, bumper shocks, bumper shock towers and all bumper seams may be welded.  All bumper ends may be trimmed or folded around.  DO NOT ADD ANY METAL TO BUMPER OR BUMPER BRACKETSNo homemade bumpers or bumper brackets, THEY MUST appear STOCK.  Bumpers may be beat down to main bumper support and welded.  Bumper shocks may be collapsed.  Bumpers may also be welded directly to frame.  All bumpers must be stock height, if it looks too high, it is, and it will have to be let down, or not run per judge’s discretion.  Rear bumper may have two 3” wide straps ¼“ thick strap to the body, this strap may be welded maximum 5” on body and 5” on bumper.  front bumper may have #9 wire in 2 locations 4 loops from bumper to radiator support only. 

4.      Engine and transmission must only be an automotive type.  Engine and transmission mounts may be welded solid.  When securing engine it must not exceed 4” in front or behind the engine.  On front of engine only, a 2” wide ¼” thick solid engine mount welded to top of frame in front of A-frame-control arm and bolted to front of engine (Only 2 mounts in front and 2 in rear of engine).  A chain or cable may be used on front of engine also but not both.  Rear of engine may only have a cable or chain to secure motor and only 1 loop of 3/8” chain may be welded to top of frame.  Transmission mounts and cross members may be altered as long as it doesn’t reinforce the frame.      limited weld rev. 2/07   

5.      Extra reinforcements, No # 9 wire, sheet metal screws, chains, cables, bolts, added metal, or welding unless specified in rules, before or during the race, unless approved by the officials, or risk disqualification. 

6.      Fenders front and rear may be rolled and bolted with a MAXIMUM of 5 3/8” bolts, with 1” washers per fender (Rolled fenders MAY NOT be welded and no added metal). 

7.      Frame may be repaired if rusted or broken but not reinforced.  The same thickness metal as frame must be used for repair with a 1" inspection hole cut to view repaired area.  Leave rust or break in frame.  Do not exceed 4" in length or just weld it back together, use only one method.  If patches are excessive in any way, they will be cut at judge’s discretion.  A 1/2” wide seam may be welded from the control arm/A-frame forward, TOP SEAM ONLY, with no added metal.  Behind the rear axel you may tie the rear frame rails together with 4 loops of #9 wire or one 3/8 cable.  This must go around the frame rails only. 

8.      Hood must remain in factory position, if there is an overhang on the hood it may be bent down.  Hood must be removed for inspection.  Hood must be bolted or chained in a MINIMUM of 4 locations or MAXIMUM of 8 locations.  A 5”x 5” 1/4” thick washer, MAXIMUM, must be used on top of hood bolts to keep them from pulling through.  The bolts must be a MINIMUM of 5/8” and a MAXIMUM of 1”, (Bolts must not be directly in front of radiator), and chains a MINIMUM of 1/4” and a MAXIMUM of 3/8” thick.  The front 2 hood bolts may go through the frame and radiator support with no mount.  The other hood bolts, must be welded or bolted to car body tin only.  Any anchors welded for hood bolts must not exceed 5” in length and mounted under hood to fender, (Example: cars with plastic fender wells).  Two 12” holes must be cut into hood for fires and four 3/8” bolts with 1” washers may be added to secure the tin together around each hole, MAXIMUM OF 8 BOLTS .All cooling fans must be covered or removed.  

9.      Radiator must remain in stock position.  Radiator blow by tubes must be secured and remain pointing down at all times.  No extra cooling allowed for radiators.  Original or electric fan is okay, ratchet straps may be used to secure radiator.  Air conditioner condenser may be welded to front of radiator support, but no added metal. 

10.   Rear end must only be an automotive type 5 lug.  Bracing allowed on rear end.  No leaf springs on non leaf spring cars.  Leaf springs must have a 2” stager and a MAXIMUM of one extra leaf, 3/8” thick.  A total of 6-spring helper clamps per leaf spring.  These clamps must only be a MAXIMUM of 2” wide and 5” long.  The leaf spring mounts may be welded to the body front and rear.  Coil spring cars may wire, chain, cable or weld springs in place.  Rear control arms may be reinforced, lengthened or shortened to achieve driveline angle.  Rear end may be tied in 2 locations, chains or cables 3/8 thick or #9 wire 4 loops only.  This may be wrapped around frame and rear end only. 

11.   Shocks must have travel and air shock hoses must be removed. 

12.   STEERING and suspension components may be interchanged, but not reinforced.  Tie rod ends only may be reinforced but must be stock.  Steering columns may be altered to prevent steering loss.

13.   Tires any ply MAXIMUM of 15” tire.  Solid, tire inside a tire, tubes, valve stem protectors and grease on tires are all okay.  No, split rims, paddle rims, reinforced rims, tractor lugs or studded tires.  All wheel weights must be removed. 

14.   Trunk must be in factory position.  The back 40% of trunk may be tucked down inside, but not welded inside.  Only two bolts may be installed through the top of trunk lids or roof on wagons.  Bolts 1" with 5”x 5" washer MAXIMUM top and bottom, they may go down through the frame in a body mount hole with spacer installed .  No sliding the whole trunk inside of trunk.  Trunk may be crushed, but must be able to see inside for inspection.  The rear decking cover in station wagons must be bolted with six 3/8” bolts and 1” washers, or chained in a MAXIMUM 6 locations, or removed completely.  A 10” inspection hole must be cut if cover is not removed..

15.   Welding, doors, trunk, and tailgate may be welded with metal no more than 3” wide maximum or 3/16” thick.  If doors, trunk, and tailgate are not welded, they must be bolted or chained with same size bolts and chains as hood in a MINIMUM OF 2 LOCATIONS PER DOOR, TRUNK, OR TAILGATE for safety.  Tops of doors may be beat down and welded with no added metal and no other window welding.  Rust holes or metal tears in body may be patched.  USE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT MATERIAL, (NO NEW TIN), patch 2” past rust or tear when patching one layer of metal  No wrapping patches around fenders.  Use only enough metal to patch hole or tear, or just weld it back together, use one method.  No interior welding except driver’s seat, driver’s and passenger lower door pillar (behind drivers seat only), battery box, gas tank bracket, transmission cooler, and brace bars/roll cage. 

16.   Window .openings may have 4 loops of #9 wire in 2 locations and may go around the frame.
